Noveus' response

Change for the better

Responding to the challenges identified by the NFB 2011 Utilities Survey.

The National Federation of Builders’ (NFB) 2011 survey of utility connections in the UK has revealed the massive frustration experienced by builders and developers in securing connections for water, gas and electricity services.

The findings further strengthen the case for the alternative approach offered by Noveus. They revealed that over 70% of developers and contractors encountered a range of problems when requesting connections, experiencing everything from communication difficulties to lack of choice and cost transparency.

Communication: building relationships

The survey shows that, despite the efforts of Ofgem and Ofwat, communication with incumbent utility companies remains problematic. Clients reported major difficulties in obtaining prompt answers to their enquiries, with many calling for single teams to deal with applications from start to finish. Noveus believe that these problems can often be resolved by cultivating strong working relationships and by getting to know the utility engineers and teams to facilitate improvements in performance levels. We also recommend that utility companies invite and report feedback from clients, increasing transparency further.

Delivery: it’s all about timing

Data gathered also showed that clients were often faced with project delays, with utility companies frequently unable to meet their timescales. It’s fair to say that utility companies are not always structured to respond to the demands imposed by clients and projects. We recognise this disconnect and work to build clear understandings on what are critical timing issues.

Costs: challenging the status quo

The survey also bears out that incumbent utility companies are unlikely to deliver the most benefit to clients and that the lack of  transparency and breakdown of costs is an issue to them. Noveus’ solution is to constructively challenge costs on the table. Achieving the right price takes a clear definition and tight management of works involved. We use clear and structured questioning to leverage new understandings and better deals for our clients, backing it with close monitoring of delivery and cost progress.

Competition: driving performance

Even 15+ years after deregulation, competition in utilities connections remains relatively limited. Yet introducing a competitive element focuses the minds of utility companies on costs and delivery.

Conclusion

We know the issues and that our expertise and perspective can help save our clients valuable time and money. We are leading the charge towards a more efficient, choice-driven and commercially focused era in utility connections.
